"This calendar celebrates the contribution of members of the Supreme Court Bar Association, during the 50 years of the Indian Constitution, for safeguarding and upholding the constitutional rights of the poor and the weak of the country. No doubt this would have been impossible without the wisdom and judicial statesmanship of our judges. The judges of the superior courts, and especially of the Supreme Court of India, have sought to help fashion a Republic of which all Indians can be proud. They have endeavoured to give to the people, regardless of their wealth, power, caste or creed, a future that is premised on the freedom of the individual and on equality of opportunity for all. In the pursuit of public interest, our courts have extended the scope of fundamental rights to include among others, prison justice, health, prevention of environmental degradation, protection of children's rights, prevention of sexual harassment of working women, consumer rights and rights of workers.

The courts has ensured that it is accessible to one and all through public interest litigation. It is indeed heartening to note that these ringing pronouncements are the fruit of the collaborative efforts of the bar and the bench. In many cases landmark judgments in our constitutional jurisprudence have come about through the ingenuity and hard work of lawyers as much as by the incisive intellect of judges. In this 50th year of the founding of the Supreme Court, we salute all our colleagues who have fought to expand the rights of the citizens and in the words of Mahatma Gandhi, himself a lawyer, "to wipe every tear from the eye of every Indian". This calendar, with its inherent limitations, includes quotations from a few of the judgments that have empowered the people to make India a better place to live in. On the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the Supreme Court Bar Association we hope that this calendar will give the world a panoramic view of the law that has come alive through its dynamic interpretation by our judges assisted by the indispensable role of a sensitive and committed bar."
